As he approaches his six-year milestone as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his future at Arsenal is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

The Spanish coach was appointed on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph within months. Yet, that first major trophy stands as his only significant piece of silverware after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” he stated in response to a query about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And many things need to fall into place in the near future as well to earn the right.”

Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a match versus Everton, the identical team Arsenal played just after his role was made public.

The Current Landscape

Given that second-placed Manchester City taking on West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal risk losing first place in the Premier League for the first time. This potential shift despite Arteta managing a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues from the beginning of last season.

He currently has 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, but is acutely aware that success is required sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

The manager expanded, stressing the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He stated further, commending the unwavering support from the club's ownership, yet identifying the squad's dedication as most crucial. “Ultimately, the key individuals are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The squad faces the weekend fixture managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a strain that is likely to see him miss action for the coming weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Despite the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta feels the club's “priorities and messaging” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

The manager referenced the team's performances as evidence of progress. “Examine the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
